Amel Meddeb Ouertani — Founding President
Dr. Amel Meddeb Ouertani is Professor of Ophthalmology, graduated from Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris. Her clinical interests include cornea and glaucoma.
She served as head of the Ophthalmic Department at Charles Nicolle University Hospital. She is very much involved in teaching and pioneered the establishment of the ICO residency curricula in Tunisia. She trained hundreds of Tunisian residents and colleagues from many African countries and organized several teaching workshops outside Tunisia.
She served as member of the Pan Arab Board of Specializations and was Director of the Tuniso-Japanese research Program with Nagasaki University who awarded her team the “Prize of encouragement to research”.
Dr Ouertani is participating in many national, regional and international scientific meetings. She is former President of the Tunisian Ophthalmological Society, Founding President of the Tunisian Society of Aerospace Medicine and of the African Society of Glaucoma.
She was member of the Advisory Board of the International Council of Ophthalmology “ICO” and facilitator in 2 ICO Programs: the Leadership Program development and the Residency Directors Course and served as Coordinator for Glaucoma at the World Ophthalmological Congress “WOC”.
She was also member of the Global Outreach committee of the American Academy of Ophthalmology “AAO”.
She also served as Tunisian national coordinator for prevention of blindness and was member of the World Health Organization monitoring committee and invited speaker in the meetings of the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness. As general Secretary of “Nadi Al Bassar”, a leading NGO in the region, she has participated in many eye camps and teaching programs and developed a clear understanding of Eye health status in Africa.
She is currently executive Vice-President of the Middle East African Council Of Ophthalmology, “MEACO” and Founding President of the Middle East African Glaucoma Society “MEAGS”.
Professor Ouertani received several National, Regional and International awards including the AAO achievement award and the ICO Mark Tso Apple Award and has been decorated as “Commandeur of Republic“ by His Excellency President of Republic of Tunisia.
Ahmed Mostafa Abdelrahman — Vice President
Dr. Ahmed Mostafa Abdelrahman, MD, FRCSED, is a professor of Ophthalmology and Consultant Glaucoma Surgeon, Cairo University. In 2015, he achieved the Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Total Quality Management (TQM) for Healthcare Reform. Dr. Ahmed is the founding President of the Egyptian Society for Continuous Ophthalmic Education (EGSCOE), 2015.
He is a glaucoma consultant with national, international publications and innovations in the field of glaucoma surgery with special interests in non-penetrating glaucoma surgeries, Laser trabeculoplasty, Glaucoma Drainage Devices, and childhood glaucomas. He is also a glaucoma reviewer for several PubMed prestigious Ophthalmology Journals.
He is the owner of the Giza specialized Eye center, a tertiary glaucoma care facility offering patient care and a workshop program. He is the head of the glaucoma service, Kasr Al Aini School of Medicine. In 2016, the Royal College of Edinburgh council appointed him to be an examiner in the overseas college exams.
He received several prestigious awards: the Education Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2019, the international scholar award, AAO, 2021, and the second-place winner of Global Contest Videos 2022, AAO on his innovative video: Triple-tunnel AGV Tube Placement.
In March 2022, he was chosen to be the Secretary-General of the Middle East African Glaucoma Society (MEAGS), a society that serves different glaucoma activities in the Middle East, Africa, and Turkey with huge international collaborations. In 2025, he was appointed the vice president position. He is a glaucoma steering committee member of EPOMEC, UAE.

Dr. Mohammed Alhemyari is a consultant ophthalmologist specializing in glaucoma and cataract surgery, with particular expertise in glaucoma drainage devices. He completed his MBBS at Sana’a University, Yemen, followed by postgraduate residency training in ophthalmology through the Arab Board of Health Specializations. He also holds the Jordanian Board in Ophthalmology, is a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MRCSEd), and a Fellow of the International Council of Ophthalmology (FICO).
He completed advanced subspecialty training in glaucoma, including fellowships at Sankara Eye Hospital, Bangalore, India, one of Asia’s leading tertiary eye care centers.
Dr. Alhemyari is an active national and international lecturer and invited speaker in the fields of glaucoma and cataract surgery. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine, Sana’a University, where he is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
He is a Board Member of the Middle East Africa Glaucoma Society (MEAGS) and holds memberships in the Yemen Ophthalmic Society and the Indian Ophthalmological Society. He also serves as the Egyptian Society for Continuous Ophthalmic Education (EGSCOE) representative in Yemen.

Ziad Khoueir — Member
Ziad Khoueir, MD, MSEd, FEBOS-GL
Dr. Khoueir completed his residency at the Saint-Joseph University in Beirut. He then pursued his glaucoma training by obtaining postdoctoral fellowships from the Glaucoma Institute in Paris (UPMC Sorbonne University, Paris, France) and subsequently from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary Hospital in Boston (Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA). Dr. Khoueir received the young ophthalmologist scholarship award during the 8th International Congress on Glaucoma Surgery in 2016.
Dr. Khoueir currently holds the position of associate director of the Glaucoma division at the Beirut Eye and ENT Specialist Hospital. He is also a visiting Consultant ophthalmologist specialising in adult glaucoma and cataract surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai in Dubai Healthcare City.
He’s a research collaborator at the Mayo Clinic Ophthalmology department. He’s a clinical instructor and lecturer at the Saint-Joseph University medical school in Beirut. He is the co-chair of the associate advisory board of the World Glaucoma Association and a member of the executive committee of the International Society of Glaucoma Surgery. He is also a member of the board of the Middle East and Africa Glaucoma Society and the Lebanese Ophthalmological Society.
Dr Khoueir chairs the Glaucoma Committee of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
His research focuses on innovative techniques in managing and diagnosing glaucoma, such as minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), glaucoma lasers and the use of Optical Coherence Tomography imaging in glaucoma. He has published more than 40 research papers and chapters on those topics in leading ophthalmology journals. He has been invited to lecture and present his work in regional and international meetings in more than 20 countries over the last few years.
Abdullahi Sadiq Mohammed — Member
Specialist at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, Nigeria. He completed his MBBS at Bayero University Kano and postgraduate residency training in Ophthalmology (FMCOph) with the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. He subsequently undertook advanced subspecialty training in glaucoma, including fellowships at the Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh, and Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich, Germany.
Dr Abdullahi has over a decade of experience in glaucoma care, surgical management, and residency training. He currently serves as Coordinator of Residency Training, Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, and Chairman of the Theatre Users’ Committee at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna. He is also a Board Member of the Faculty of Ophthalmology, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, and the Middle East Africa Glaucoma Society.
An active clinician-researcher, Dr Abdullahi has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in reputable international and regional journals, with research interests spanning glaucoma genetics, surgical outcomes, and glaucoma care in sub-Saharan Africa. He has contributed to global guideline documents, including toolkits for glaucoma management in Africa and Nigeria, and is a regular faculty resource person and invited speaker at national and international scientific meetings.
Dr Abdullahi is a member of the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria, Glaucoma Society of Nigeria, Middle East Africa Glaucoma Society, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He is a recipient of several competitive awards, including the ARVO Developing Country Eye Researcher Travel Fellowship and the Commonwealth Eye Health Consortium Clinical Fellowship Award. He is also a co-founder of the Ahkhad Glaucoma Foundation and actively involved in charitable glaucoma care services.
